325i auto gearbox

I have a 1993 325i coupe with a dodgy automatic gearbox. The number on the box is 5HP 18 and I have located a 5HP 19 for sale. Does anyone know if they are compatible with each other i.e. the 19 can be fitted in place of the 18 without too much alteration?

1.) You posted the same question twice, 45 minutes apart. This is poor form and you should refrain from repeating this mistake.

2.) The transmission the manual says you should have is the A4S 310R. The numbers you gave do not match this one.

1.) Apologies. New to this. Had to get teenage son to help. If you notice question came from two different accounts. One from me and one from him that I didn't realise he had posted.

2.) Whether or not the manual says I should or shouldn't have a particular box is irrelevant. The fact is the box in the vehicle is a

5HP18 and that is the part number my mechanic has requested. As he is not a BMW specialist garage he is not sure if the 5HP19 will fit.If you visit

they show schematics ofthe gearboxes in question which look very similar with almost identaclespecs.I was merely asking if anyone had had any experience similar tomine who could help. Thanks fro not a lot.

Sorry for the late post, I hope you have resolved your problem.

But, was reading my Bentley manual earlier today and found more information on your transmission. The gearbox has an ID tag on the driver's side (assuming USA operation) just behind the bell housing and above the pan, that describes the model. The manual SPECIFICALLY says to not identify the transmission based on any castings in the case.
