Rover 214 and 218SD Gearbox

Simple question for someone who knows the answer.

Is the gearbox on a Rover 218SD the same as a gearbox on a rover 214? Both cars are about 1994? So could the 218 gearbox be put into a 214?

They're very different engines - the 214 used the Rover K-series, the 218D the PSA XUD - so the bellhousings will almost certainly be different.

Even if the bellhousings are the same or interchangable, the gearing will be way out, as the diseasel will have a far lower rev range.

214s are hardly scarce - the right box should be easy to source.

The 218 uses the honda box, same as the 216

'Fraid not, the Honda engine is mounted 'backwards' (i.e. on the passenger side with the gearbox in front of the driver), and they're different anyway - the driveshafts won't fit. Believe me, I tried about 3 months ago.

Sorry, but they won't fit. The K-series engine (i.e. yours) uses the R65 gearbox designed by Peugeot and is notorious for it's input shaft bearings failing. Mine went on my 1993 414.

The diesel engine, though it is a Peugeot lump, uses Rover's own PG1 gearbox (also fitted to the 220/420 and 600 and 800 model which uses Rover engines) - though I hear stories that it is Honda designed. As others have pointed out, the bell-housing is different so the bolt holes, etc. wouldn't line up. Neither would your driveshafts fit and the PG1 is reputed to shred the diff bearings. Mine went a few weeks ago. :-(

P.S.

If your gearbox has input shaft bearing problems then any gearbox specialist will be able to replace this for you. I paid about £150 to have my 'box reconditioned, but that was with me removing and refitting it myself! Alternatively try to get a gearbox from the new shape 214/414 as I think these used an uprated version of the same gearbox, coded R65u.

Lemme get this straight...

They use a Pug box with the Rover engine and a Rover box with the Pug engine?

No wonder they're reduced to rebadging Poppadoms...

That's just what I was thinking.

Strictly speaking, they're all Rover gearboxes - they build them, even if it's not their own design. Unfortunately the R65 was designed by Peugeot for low powered engines such as used in the 106 and Citroen AX; putting over

100BHP (i.e. the standard 16V 1.4i K-series) through them is unwise, especially if you also tow a lot! The newer ones are uprated for higher torque, presumably using stronger bearings?

The reason Rover used the XUD engine was because although they already had a very efficient 2.0TD engine (as used in Montego and Maestro), it wasn't very refined and wouldn't have fitted the image they wanted to project with the

200/400 range. The Pug diesel was much smoother and quieter, though less economical, and was used until Rover had sorted the L-series diesel which was fitted since.
