Persistent DSC fault

I've got what's become a serious problem as the garage can't fix it. The DSC light is permanently on and has been since I got the car in December, also the ABS light comes on at startup and goes off after driving a few yards. It's a 1997 540iA.

The story so far is the BMW specialist I've been taking it to diagnosed a steering angle sensor, I replaced it, but it still showed a fault and he couldn't initialise the sensor. He then decided it was the control unit. According to him, on Friday he changed the control box, sent it to the BMW dealer to set up, and it still didn't work. He's given up after having the car for 2 days in total.

The BMW dealer contacted me and offered to diagnose the fault at £120 an hour which I'd have to pay whether or not they fix it. Hmmm. At least they gave me a printout with these codes. Make any sense to anyone?

59 CAN fault (interrupt to DME1) 84 Rotation-rate sensor (plausibility) 97 Steering-angle sensor (adjustment)

I'd love some help with this.
