Heater problem

I have a 1992 GMC 1500 pickup and the heater is only getting warm. It takes about 10 miles or so to get warm and when the engine idles it will blow cold air. I have a 5.7 liter motor and the radiator is filled with antifreeze.

Two things come to mind right away, one is that the heater core is clogged. The other is that the thermostat isn't working right. Is the top radiator hose getting hot? If not the thermostat may not be allowing the motor to heat sufficiently.

Also my temp gauge doesn't work. Could this be the thermostat isn't working right?

antifreeze.

It depends on what you mean by it doesn't work. If it never moves or is always showing hot or cold, no the thermostat isn't doing that.

If you mean the temperature shows cold when your car blows cold and that it shows warmer when it blows warmer then there's nothing wrong with it.

There's a separate temperature sending unit for the gauge.
