My 99 Silverado got sick today

Howdy,

I was hoping to get some opinions on what to look at tomorrow... hope to get it running again soon.

I have a 99 Silverado 4.3 v6 single cab with 77,000+ miles that I bought new. Today I was cruizin down the highway, full tank of gas, on cruize control, listening to the radio when it just quit running. All my gauges went to zero except for the temp & bat voltage. I pulled onto the shoulder & attempted to start it. It turned over just fine, but would not start. On the information center, Security, low fuel, Battery rotate when the key is on. I've never seen Security on there that I noticed...

Anyway, engine would not start. I checked the fuses & they came out okay, I switched the ignition relay with the horn relay to no avail. I took the cover off the carb & put a little bit of gas in there, & a quick shot of ether, tried to start engine again & it started... but VERY low... short lived idle then died. Tried it again, & it acted like I wanted to catch but didn't. I called my friend & we towed it home so I could think about it & ask the professionals here :)

One other thing, when I turn on the key, there usually is the distinctive whine of the fuel pump... but that is not present... making me think that the fuel pump had gone out. Do you think that this is the cause of the problem? It makes since... I'm wondering why my speedometer gauge went to zero, & stayed at zero while towing, and the fuel gauge does not display the level anymore when the key is on.

I've never had any problems with this truck other than the ABS module going erratic on me roughly 2 years ago. I just pulled the fuse for that.

Your expert advice would truly be appreciated!

My first concern is that you think you have a carb on a 99 Silverado. :)

I would say that your fuel pump has quit on you.

I don't know this for a fact, but I assume that your speedo showed zero mph while being towed because you have an electronic speed sensor.

You can check the fuel pump relay and the ground for the pump, but I'm guessing your pump is toast. It's not an uncommon thing among GM trucks.

HEHEHEHE Okay its not a carb! This is why I sought the advice of you professionals here lol!

Replacing the fuel pump is definatly within my abilities... especially since its a single cab & I can just take the bed off and get at it from the top :) I'll check the relay & ground first.

I appreciate you takin the time to help me out :)
