or...maybe lied....maybe he never changed the filter, maybe he wuz jest gonna drain the oil and do a refill........

I had to do that once. Something went kablooey in the rear wheel of my
82 Datsun 4x4. The whole brake assembly came apart and kinda ground itself into metal sand in my rotor. I was a kid, had no money and no way to get it fixed. The wheel cylinder had came apart from not having anything to push against and was leaking fluid everywhere.I took a hacksaw, cut the line, smashed the hell out of it with a hammer and drove on. I traded that truck in like that. Stopped pretty good for only having 3 wheels with brakes on them.
I drove a Saab 8 blocks in second gear using the starter motor when I was 17 :)
People wonder why I am such a big supporter of mandatory vehicle safety inspections.

Safety inspections are all about revenue. Some of us keep our cars safe and some of us have a cousin or a friend that will throw a sticker on it without looking. I was an inspector in Pennsylvania and sold lots of brake jobs, shocks, mufflers, tires, headlights and lots of other stuff. Safety inspections sometimes correct a problem but for the most part, its just dollars. Have you ever looked at the junker next to you and said, "How in the world did that thing pass inspection?" A brand new car can fail but a six pack can get almost anything passed. I believe in the inspections if performed by the hiway patrol and they have 6 or 8 different officers inspecting different things on a rotating basis. Let the customer watch! Show him why it won't pass! Don't recommend cousin Larry's fixit shop! Just my 02 - I don't really believe inspections fix anything.
When my dad worked at a certain mine, a boom truck came into the gas shop for brakes. *All* the brake lines were leaking. He removed them, and asked the foreman to order new lines (all the foremen had their papers BTW). Foreman said we need the truck for tomorrow morning, make lines. Whoops, not enough steel line to do the job. That's ok said the foreman, use
*copper*. Dad said sure, if you'll sign a paper saying you ordered me to do it, knowing he wouldn't, and of course he didn't. So Dad refused. So the foreman said he would reassign him and ask someone else to do it. Dad said go ahead, I'll make a phone call and we'll see how long you keep your job and your papers.The truck sat there until the steel lines arrived.
