Steering rack gone bad.

Mar 04, 2006 4 Replies

I have a 2000 Silverado 4X4 with 130,000 miles on it. The steering started getting difficult when cold and turning the wheel to the left about a month ago. It has been getting worst and now does it even when it's warm. Is this a fairly common problem and does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement unit?

Temporary fix may be to very thoroughly flush the power steering system with clean power steering fluid.

I've always been a fan of Moog.

There is no steering rack on a Silverado, its not rack and pinion (thank goodness). There is a sensor on the steering column on some of the current body style that is known to cause issues like this, could be it.

Thanks for your replies. I believe Eugene is right about not having rack and pinion steering. If I remember correctly only the two wheel drive trucks have it (in 2000 anyway).

Not yet, the GMT 900's are going rack and pinion so I'm glad I bought mine now.
