Why so much spam.

For several years I did not give out my email address, I belong to a secure site and that is where I spend most of my internet time. I received zero spam, none.

Another site that I am a member of does not publicly display my email address with my posts, nor does it display email addresses of others who post. Messages are posted immediately on both sites.

A few months ago I decided to join Google and that is when the spam began, from day one and shows no sign of letting up, two hundred or more emails per day. The email addresses are being taken from here by the spammers.

I am seriously considering not taking part in anything that has to do with Google. The other sites that I belong to will post a message immediately, here it takes 3 to 9 hours which to me sounds like we are going back in time, what about when someone has an emergency that needs a quick answer?

Google is a big name on the internet, I have been using a computer and modem since 1984 and I am fast coming to the opinion that Google sucks big time. Does anyone know a site where messages are posted immediately and that user email addresses are not put on public display? TIA

Rod, You get what you pay for. The internet is no different. Google provides you a service 100% free and you are complaining about it. There are many for pay options out there which will accomplish what you want, and I would suggest searching via the evil Google to find those providers.

I'm actualy willing to bet that most users of this group do NOT acces it via google groups.... Google groups is just a fancy way for google to shrink wrap a network that has existed since the very early days of readilly accessable internet (to he honest i think it may date all the way back to the old bulletin board services of the Commodore era). What you need is an ISP that has access to uesnet, and outlook express or some other newsreader, then its just a matter of setting up your news reader to the ISP;s usenet server, usually along the lines of news.ispname.net or something. Then its all there, you can spoof your email address so that its not public (but people who are good at it can still find you if they want). I've never gotten spammed at my primary email addy, so i guess it works cus i post fairly regularly to several groups. Just remember you may be accessing it via google, but it sure as hell isn't google, its an entire network, very similar to the www in many ways, and google just puts a wrapper on their server to make it accessible from the web. Shoot, i'm willing to bet that as long as your internet service isn't free then it probaly does cary usenet access, just have to do a bit of searching to find the servername.......(can't remember, does aohell have usenet?)

Normally you access news groups from your ISP's news server. Go to the settings of the program you use (like Outlook Express that is free with Windows) and put something else in that isnt you email. If you want others to see your mail put NOSPAM or something similar in the middle of it and put it in your signature ( snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com ). That way it cant be jacked by programs that search for it. Thats what alot of people do. Sign up for hotmail or something just for the purpose of needing an email for stuff on the net and use it. NEVER put your real email on anything on the net. If you do the spam will come.

Just a point of interest. The poster before said to use the words " NOSPAM " somewhere in your addy.

Just to let you know it is better not to use the "SPAM" word at all, as the harvesters are wise to this routinre, ans routinely delete the word spam from all adresses they harvest

I Know this must be true because I used to use this. " snipped-for-privacy@SPAMSUCKS.yahoo.ca " I instantly began getting spam addressed to" snipped-for-privacy@sucks.yahoo.ca "and it was coming to me just like that ! with the spam ripped out, and the sucks still intact.

Since then I changed my method a wee bit. Now if I want replies I quote in the text of my post "Please remove all the EXTRA LETTERS to reply to me at snipped-for-privacy@EXTRALETTERSyahoo.ca " or "please take out the trash before you reply to me at snipped-for-privacy@TRASHyahoo.ca "

Then if the bots are programmed to ripp the spam word, they still dont harvest me. I have gottn no spam , no virus's since i began this method. not one!

Also notice that the address that just shows up automatically from outlook express is a complete spoof, " snipped-for-privacy@beyond.com " and I only put my real semi spoofed address in MANUALLY at the bottom of posts I would like a direct reply too, as opposed to a reply through the newsgroup. get it? If not happy spam sorting !

NOW, CAN WE PLEASE MOVE THIS TOPIC TO A MORE APPROPRIATE NEWSGROUP BECAUSE ALL THE NG'S SEEM TO BE FILLING UP WITH THIS VERY SAME TOPIC, "WHERE IS ALL THE SPAM/VIRUS'S COMING FROM."

I CAME IN HERE TO READ ABOUT CHEVY'S DIDNT YOU ?

------------------------ just an example, but very good point. Its funny how spammers go to great lengths to get around filters, to send crap to people who obviously dont want the crap.- Dont want it so bad they buy filters to try to stop it. Makes no since to me. Man I wish there was a law to stop this crap!

Someone very funny uses MYPANTS and tells people that in order to reply to him, they should remove MYPANTS

Hi!

Ok...

Doesn't mean they didn't start selling your e-mail address...and really this is something of an uncommon feature for a site allowing access to Usenet.

Joined Google to do what, exactly? Post to newsgroups? Yes?

If so, you just solved your own problem. A valid reply-to address published with a newsgroup posting is a guaranteed way to get every manner of spam known to exist. This really isn't Google's fault...it's a fact of life on Usenet anymore.

Make sure it's their fault *first*. If you published a message with a reply to address in plain format you got what you were asking (albeit possibly unintentionally) for.

The 3 to 9 hours lead time is way high and really only refers to how long it will take *them* to pick it up. When I post from Google, it shows up in mere moments on my ISP's news server.

I agree...they could improve this drastically...this is the only aspect of Google groups that really isn't great.

They have yet to do anything that would make me think they are anything less than an excellent operation. I don't know of other search engines that don't use pop up, pop under or just plain pesky advertising and that alone is enough for me to keep using them...

See if your ISP has a news server and configure a newsreader (Forte Agent, Outlook Express, others...) to use it. Or pay another news service (NewsGuy, GigaNews, others...) for web access to newsgroups. If your ISP does not have a news server, you could still use a free (although registration required, and no web interface that I know of) service like individual.net.

If you don't want your e-mail address in plain view and inherently getting spammed as a result, don't post with it or corrupt it somehow (see the example in my reply to you). If you do post with it in plain view, expect the spammers to come in droves.

Every news server has a fair bit of "lead time" before messages show up however. You probably won't find *too* many that have instantaneous pickup of messages no matter where they hail from on the 'net.
