3.3L V6 Engine Issues

The engine in my '92 Grand Caravan LE AWD will not start. Yesteday i changed the thermostat and its now having this problem. Before changing the thermostat it ran perfectly.

This is what ive worked out:

- ECU does not report any engine failure codes (only 12 & 55), but the engine also has not ran since the ECU was last reset (so explains the lack of error codes?).

- The injector relay does turn on, but injectors are not firing on cranking

- There is no spark on cranking

- Fuel pump appears to be working

So i guess this points to a cam (does it have a cam sensor?) or crank sensor issue? I gather the ECU is ok as i do get the 12 and 55 fault codes, and the fuel pump does turn on.

Can anyone tell me exactly where to find the cam and crank sensors? I know the crank sensor is meant to be located somewhere around the top of the bellhousing where it meets the block, but for the life of me, i cant find it (maybe hidden by the exst manifold??).

Thanks!

Thanks, i found the cam sensor. Im guessing this is the problem as the cables would have been moved around when i was changing the thermostat.

I have checked the wires for breaks on the loom side of the sensor connector.

Is there an easy way to test the cam angle sensor itself? I assume it needs a 5V supply, ground, and then the last wire is a signal out.

Thanks.

Oh, everything was running fine, besides a overheating issue which pointed to a bad thermostat. Hence why it was replaced.

So the question to ask yourself, is what did you mess up while changing the thermostat? Did you unhook any wires or vacuum hoses to gain better access? Knock something off with a wrench while changing the thermostate? Think through you procedure and see if you can remember unhooking something, slipping with a wrench, etc. It is fairly unlikely that your engine just coincidentally failed when you changed the thermostat. Possible, yes, but not probable. Probability favors something that happened related to the thermostat replacement.

this is the problem, if it ran fine why mess with it?

Well i now have it running intermittently.

About 50% of the time itll start.

When it does start sometimes itll run perfectly, other times itll splutter at idle and wont rev very well. A few times when it has been idling smoothly itll just stop dead... no splutter and then die, itll just stop completeley.

Engine codes are always 12, 55... so its not finding anything wrong.

I guess cam and crank sensors would be the main suspects? The cam sensor looks ok, i still havnt been able to find the crank sensor.

Thanks for the continuing help!

Those two sensors is what I would suspect.

Here's a pic of where the crank sensor is:

The cam sensor is located just below the t/stat housing. disconnect the plug and dry it out. if that doen't fix replace the cam sensor. look right above the water pump just to the left of center as you are looking at the engine.

good luck
