There is a "ladder" tape which is part of the regulator which strips/breaks, sounds like what happened to yours.

New ladder tape is available from your dealer -or- from your local NAPA store.

Do-able job for someone with basic mechanical skills.

Agreed. The part is about $20 where ever I've looked, Including the dealer, Napa and Autozone. Requires removing the door trim, including the handle/armrest and the power door lock/ window control panel. You have to remove the glass and the plastic piece it attaches to. The old tape will be broken and you have to make sure you get all the pieces out. The new tape must be trimed to the right length, so keep the old tape (pieces) to use as a measure. It definitely is not hard, but the first time around it's a little confusing.

Be careful removing the door trim. It's held onto the door using clips that can break, even though they're metal. There's a plastic covered foam sheeting under the door trim. Just peel it back carefully to get access to the inside of the door where the glass and tape are.
