The ABS will stay on (more than 2 seconds) occasionally, usually when I start up first thing in morning. The rest of the day it behaves it self. When it does come on, a 3 ignition switch check gives a 55 which doesn't tell me anything. I don't believe this is a serious issue unless it stays on permanently. Any ideas anybody? Can I safely ignore it for now?

Yes you can ignore it, It is doing a self test and is just requiring more time to complete it. If the lite(s) stay on or come on while driving then you need to have it checked out. Any time the red brake lite comes on you should get it checked out as soon as possibly. The yellow lite just means you wont have anti lock brakes but will have the regular brakes only.

This code mean ?Complete of fault display on the check engine light? in your case no error codes are stored. The reason is that the ABS has his own controller and isn't the same. When ABS like stays on, you can drive without ABS only with normal break. The most reason for a faulty or inoperable ABS are the sensors.
