Grand CAravan 93 3.3

I started my van today and the check engine light stayed on. I turned it off and back on and it went off. I checked the error codes with the key on, key off method and see a '41'. Since the second time it started without the check engine light staying on, should I be concerned with the error code ? If so, does anyone know what in the alternator would cause this error ? The charging system seems fine.

Thanks, Nick

AllData tests indicate it could be a bad pcm. I'll need to diagnosis it to rule out a bad computer.

I had this once (code 41) on my 93GC, 3.3, and it turned out to be a dirty connection at the alt. Cleaned up all the connections, reset, and never occurred again.

I'm betting that the brushes are worn out. That's the code I got when I last replaced the alternator. I couldn't find any replacement brushes locally so I just replaced the whole thing. You might try disconnecting the wires at the alternator (disconnect battery first) and put an ohm meter across the 2 field connections and spin the alternator with your hand. A good reading will be about a steady 3 ohms. If readings are a lot higher and erratic, the brushes are worn.

Actually it turned out to be a bad computer. Had a few problems happen that I couldn't explain. Driving down the road, the speedo would go to zero and then back to the correct speed and you could feel the tranny engage. It was as if you turned off the key and then back on. Then I got a 41 code. I got a exact match computer at the local junk yard for $50.00 and put it in. The van runs great and all those quirky little problems went away.

this time is was the computer, thanks, nick
