Classic Car dealers

Hi,

I am going to the Classic car show in London (Alexandra Palace) on 23rd February. I will be in and around London and want to spend the day visiting a few classic car dealers.

Any recommendations? I am not keen on the posh dealers in central London (Chelsea cars etc.), but more normal type cars. I know there are a few South of London just outside M25. I dont mind driving a bit to see them.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Many of the big name ones will be at Ally Pally.

I s'pose the key question is "What sort of cars do you like?" You say "not posh, more normal". Not exactly easy to recommend off that...

Yanks? Pre-war? Specific marque?

Oh, and as far as Ally Pally itself goes - I've been helping to man a club stand there for the last couple of years and... I find it a rather less than gripping event, to be frank.

post war cars like MGs, Ford, Austin, Morris - nothing really specific

I know. I used to go to the show in Birmingham in November. However, since they moved the date a few years ago by one week and it no longer suits.

What other shows would you recoment AP show?

"TS" realised it was Fri, 12 Jan 2007 19:01:12 -0000 and decided it was time to write:

'Normal' is a very subjective term and utterly useless without insight in your frame of reference. For Nick Mason, a Ferrari is a normal car.

We all consider ourselves normal, but we all know many people who aren't.

So what are 'normal type cars' in your frame of reference?

I don't know of many dealers within London for that sort of stuff - rents too high. Have a rummage through Craptical Plastics, I s'pose.

Lots of dealer adverts and lots of 'HFM?!' prices, too.

If you are prepared to visit Bath, my local restorer is currently advertising a couple of MGBs and a Spit in the local paper. He isn't a dealer as such, he is a restorer who occasionally takes trade-ins.

formatting link
for contact details - but ignorethe website Car Sales bit, it is out of date. I don't think he has updatedhis website since his computer crashed a while ago. The contact details onthat page are still current though. Jim

Get a copy of Practical Classics. Most dealers advertise there.

BTW, you're going to a show in North London *and* going to visit dealers south of the M25 in one day?

It's OK, he doesn't mind "driving a bit"...

The guy just wants to go and kick a few tyres whilst on a trip to London.

Do you really think that 2 MGs and a Spit will tempt him all the way down to Bath???

lol

Reminds me of a Canadian cousin visiting me who intended doing a day trip to Aberdeen to visit relations. By car.

The Brits do it as well. I was working in Hamburg when a colleague from England dropped in on a sort of made up excuse for visiting at company expense. He told me he wanted to go to see friends in Germany so he'd hired a car for the weekend. He was planning to leave on Saturday morning to drive to Freiburg im Breisgau, thinking he could then drive back in time to get the last flight out on Sunday. It's about 7 hours drive to Freiburg provided you don't stop for food, water, fuel etc. and provided that it's not the usual stau from Frankfurt to Basel.

IIRC the last flight back was about 3pm. Of course he didn't want to fly back from Basel because that would make his deception blindingly obvious.

He actually did it, but I think he could only spend an hour with his friends before having to turn around and come back.

Some Aussies were staying with my in-laws years ago, NW corner of the M25. They'd been in Scotland for a few days, and arrived back a bit early to find nobody in. So, since they were going to be waiting for an hour or two, they went to see Stonehenge.
