Selling cars to EU countries

Any advice, please, on selling a classic car to someone in the EU? In particular, I'm selling the Mk VI to a chap in Italy. He's SWIFTing me a deposit, but it's not yet clear how he wants to get the old girl over there. Thank heavens I only offered UK delivery.

I've found a bit on the DVLA site about exporting, but it seems to concentrate on taking your own car abroad permanently.

If he just turns up with a heap of cash, can I just pretend I think he lives in Peckham, and give him the V5?

I would have thought that once he has handed over the cash and you have given him the V5 it then becomes his property and so his problem, where ever he lives in the world. If he then wants to take it back to Italy it is up to him to sort the relevant paperwork. Make sure you fill out the sellers part of the V5 and get a receipt for the sale so you can prove it has been sold in case of any future problems i.e..parking tickets, speeding fines etc.

Kevin, you don't have to pretend anything. He's simply a foreign buyer acquiring an item. The legal issues are his to deal with post-sale. That's not to say, of course, that you can't help him by providing a few numbers from the Yellow Pages for specialist transportation companies / vehicle exporters. He can then pick their collective brains.

I wholeheartedly agree with Phil though, just bloomin' well make sure you exchange proper receipts, dated, addressed and signed! (Little bit of anecdotal experience here)
