having a strange problem....

1994 trans am gt, 50,000 miles, went to start it this afternoon turned over once, didn't start. all of a sudden something started running non-stop (sounded like it was coming from the lower engine bay area). even with the ignition off and the key out it was still running until i disconnected the battery. if the starter has developed a short would it run non-stop? while this thing was running the car would not even crank, any ideas? thanks.

maybe the starter wasn't engageing. i would think that it would stop when the key was removed however.

checked again when i got home from work, it's doing the same thing as soon as i hook up the battery. no key in the ignition, and the ignition in the "off" position.

Hitman0187 is probably right that the starter didn't engage. Several possible reasons for that. If it is still spinning though, then there is still juice going to the solenoid which means you have a bad relay in the circuit.
