Help needed: 1991 Trans Am Tailgate Disassembly

Jan 10, 2005 2 Replies

Hi folks,

I want to disassemble the tailgate of my 91 Trans Am (with that wrap-around spoiler) because I want to replace the glass. Now how do I take that thing apart? I removed the tailgate from the car (that was easy). Then I removed the inner trim panel from the underside of the tailgate. Looking "into" the inside of the rear part of the tailgate, I can see (I think, eight) nuts; four of them bolts go straight thru the glass, the other four bolts seem to fix the spoiler to the tailgate. I removed those nuts, but nothing comes loose... How do I have to proceed?

Any help will be very much appreciated,

Markus

Good chance the glass is glued in with sealer and it's not a fun job to do on your own! Might want to defer this one to a glass shop if you've never done it or don't have a GM shop manual (you do have one, right?).

Is the glass intact or broken? Joe--ASE Certified Parts Specialist & 10th Ann.Club Tech Director '80 Carousel Red Turbo T/A, 27k orig. '79 "Y89" 400/4 speed 10th Ann. T/A, 57k orig '84 Olds 88 Royale Bgm 2 dr, 307 "Rocket" (lol), 143k and still going....

Joe is right, that sealer is some nasty stuff, real gooey...try a good adhesive remover or, as joe said, take it somewhere...
