97 Exlporer - Timing Chain rattle

On starting the vehicle (especially form cold, but also for instant when warm too), the rattling form the engine sounds like it very unhappy. I'm told it is the timing chain and one yard has indicated thats an engine out and huge cost which i can believe. But since it has only done 97500kms I can't believe it is a chain problem per se. Is it possible that it is in desperate need of some timing work? It runs fine on a run and doesn't grumble (rattle) if I push it hard? Any suggestions / help would be most appreciated. I don't have a service manual and will go get one if folks think it is a service item, but if it is a workshop job, I may as well get it in and fixed.

If this is the V6 SOHC engine then there is a extended warranty (00M12,

01M??) on the cam chain guides and some other components that can cause these noises. Take it to a Ford dealer ASAP and they may be able to fix it up for free.

Hi Allan, Can you tell me a bit more regarding the extended warranty as I just replaced the motor on my 96 explorer after the timing chain jumped a link after rattling for about 6 months. They wanted $8000+ AUD to fix the timing chain, I got the new motor fitted for $4800AUD.

Thanks David

They are Ford general recalls -- any Ford dealer should know about them but they are only for the SOHC V6 engine which was only used from 1997 onward IIRC. You can check for recalls etc. at this site:
