97 Explorer - utility belt humming sound

Aug 02, 2003 2 Replies

Hello,

I have a 97 Explorer Sport, 6cyl 4.0 SOHC. When the weather gets hot, sometimes the engine starts making this really loud low frequency humming noise. I think the problem is somewhere around the utility belt, because the utility belt starts resonating when this happens. I've replaced utility belt a couple of times which didn't fix the problem. I've checked all the bearings and everything seems to be running smoothly.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks, Hilbert

It's probably your fan clutch. I have the same issue where it sounds like a semi-truck, but the sound frequency will only go so high as I accelerate and then the sound will level off at around

2500 RPM's.

Hope this helps,

I never did replace it, it still works and I have no problem with the hum. Sounds like a mac truck, I kinda like it... :)

I don't hink it's too hard to replace yourself if you're so inclined.
