The light has nothing to do with mileage or scheduled maintenance. It indicates that the ECM (computer) detected a problem. Have it scanned for trouble codes, diagnosed and repaired. But before you spend any money, there is one thing you can do: check that the fuel cap is tight. A loose fuel cap will set a trouble code and turn on the CEL. If that was the problem, the light will turn off after a few drive cycles. This is mentioned in your user's manual.

Check your owners manual... IIRC, the interval can be changed to suit your preferences.
