If the engine light is on, where can you go for a free check? Pepboy? The local dealer charged. $93 for a diagnotic check.

I believe Auto Zone does this for free also.
The dealer will charge $93 to diagnose what is causing the lite to come on
Pepboys just pulls the codes and try to sell you stuff you don't need
There is a difference
No, no, no... the $93 is to pay for the vaseline we need when we bend him over the desk.... Quite obviously, the experts at PepBoys and such are "under-utilized" (and, for many, the only reason they work at these establishments is because they couldn't associate "DING!" and "Fries are done!!!").
The overwhelming desire is for "free"... While I have no problem with helping a DIYer learn how to diagnose his/her concern, I start to get pent up over "free"...
Documents and publications are prepared by those that get paid for their efforst. They are copyright material and are dispensed by those that hold the copyright.. in what-ever manner the copyright holder sees fit. Our access to these publications (at the dealership) are by subscriptions that can total thousands of dollars per month.... FWIW, most of these subscriptions are NOT optional...
Additionally, all those years of experience and all those thousands of dollars spent on training a GOOD tech (read that as "getting paid a decent living") possesses mean nothing.... The kid that get's paid commission on parts sales is much smarter (and the parts, even though they are mostly "off shore", must be far better quality than OEM).
Not dumping on you, Johan... all you did was open the door for another "fat old man diatribe"...
