I need to replace the transmission on this car. Ford has two different ones, the AOXD and the AX4N. Are they interchangeable?

Actually, for 1997, you will want a AX4S(stamped AXOD on the pan) or the AX4N.
They are not interchangeable. Even vehicle harnesses are different for the two applications.
