i have a 96 windstar that there seems to be a loud clacking comming from the front underneath,i can't seem to find anything loose or worn.,there does seem to be a lot of play in the cv joint when the front is raised,i can turn the wheel(shaft ass.)about 3 to 5 inches from side to side on both sides and it does clack when i turn rit,. is it common for the shaft to turn with as much play or should it be stiffer and no noise when turning?? could it be the cv shaft or where the cv locks into the trans???
windstar cv or trans problem????

Inner CV Joint probably.
You probably hear it clunk when you shift from Park to Reverse, Reverse to Drive, and Drive to Reverse. More prominantly between Drive and Reverse since it's shifting direction.
How many miles? Do you traverse on less than favorable roads?
