Is there a way to replace what is in effect an idiot light/gauge so that it actually becomes an effective oil pressure gauge?

There are aftermarket pressure guages that actually measure the pressure on a continuous basis. You can't really replace the indicator you have now, but you can install a secondary indicator that does the job you want.
You mean you have a gauge, but it's triggered by an on/off switch through a resistor? Short answer, yes - I did it on my '93 - but it was barely better than it was before, I ended up hanging a mechanical gauge under the dash.

Thanks Jeff.

That is what I meant and that is also what I was afraid of. I was trying to avoid adding any dangling gauges under the dash. Down there they are also difficult to see quickly. Thanks for at least confirming my thoughts.
