My 2001 Ford Escort won?t shift into any gear. The shifter won?t move, the car starts fine but can?t put into reverse or any gear. Any suggestions to what I can check myself before I have to tow it to a repair shop. Never had any problems before until this morning. Please help

Could be lots of things, but my Taurus wouldn't shift out of park due to a $2 electronic part. Guy at the dealership did it for me, wrote off half the labor for a total of $50. That and the towing of the stupid thing....

Check your brake lites, check the bulbs and the switch
Also you can turn ignition key to "run" (dont start!) , shift car to neutral, start car and shift to D or R and drive
