Ford Ammeter

Hi Group, I am a newbie to Ford Trusks,( Any trucks actually.) I recently bought an '87 Motorhome with a 460. The ammeter hardly moves at all. With the engine not running and all electrical on, lights, fan etc, the needle moves only about 1/16 of an inch discharge. With the engine running and everything off, the needle moves about 1/16 charge. It has a 90 amp alternator. No scale on the gauge so I don't know what the needle is indicating. Is this normal? It has a new alternator and the battery stays fully charged. Thanks for any input., Geoff
