Buy the cheap plastic tool, you'll use it next time you change the filter.

You can get the tool at Autozone for about $8, or probably borrow it for free.

It's a little plastic doodad that slips around the line and releases the spring inside the fuel line connector. You should be able to get it at any auto parts store, I don't think they are very expensive.

Whatever you do don't try to remove the filter without the tool. The clip inside will bend and you will have to replace the fuel lines at a cost of over two hundred dollars. Even with the right tool the job is no fun. Gas will run down your arm and get all over the place. The system runs at 32 psi so there is pressure behind it. you could relieve the pressure at the schrader valve however it will still make a mess. I would advise everyone to try a repair before taking it in but for the $50.00 you will pay it is well worth it.

You're right about using the tool, but the job is not that bad.

I've found, (after doing them for 20 some years) that the best way is to use the plastic tool that is actually the next one too big. Take the larger of the two tools that comes in the package and it works better than the one your supposed to use.

At one time, the clips inside the fuel filter couplings were available separately. Guess how I know...

That's good to know. The other option is to steal a clip out of a recall package (one way check valve). With minor alterations it works great. The help package sounds like an easier way to go. Good call!
