Oil filter on 2000 Ranger

I always have a bitch of a time trying to take the damn oil filter off of my

2000 Ranger, V6. Does anyone have any suggestions on a better way to grasp it and take it off? Any good tools out there?

Thanks in advance,

I just changed my oil and filter yesterday and the filter was fairly easy to take off. The most important thing is to not overtighten the filter to begin with.

I put a K&N oil filter on it yesterday and it has a large nut built into its end. It can be tightened and removed with a socket.

Just don't tighten it so much. It's amazing how tight most people THINK a filter needs to be. Let the gasket contact, then 1/2 turn at the most. Be sure to grease, NOT OIL, the rubber gasket. I manage a fleet of 35 fords and dodges and haven't used a filter wrench since I took over 6 years ago.

I use a Sears brand strap wrench to loosen and tighten the filter on my F250 diesel. The filter is perfectly smooth with no grips built in.

They come in a set of two - the smaller one should work on a standard size filter.

That's the problem. The steering wheel shaft is in the way. So there's only one bolt that I'll have to remove to move the shaft?

Thanks again!
