slave throwout combo

My 2001 F150, small v-6, 5 speed, has been leaking around the bell housing. Apparently Ford thinks it convenient to hide the slave cylinder inside the bell housing and attached to the throwout bearing so the dealer can charge $450 for what ought to be a $100 fix. Anyway, I'm wondering if this is a common problem with less than 40K miles on the odometer. Also, the clutch works intermittently (when the weather warms up a bit). Any chance I might get away with bleeding the system?
