"When it is necessary to replace the wiper arm or the entire assembly, the assembly must be removed from the vehicle.

• The wiper arms are either mounted onto a threaded shaft and held in place by a nut, or they are pressed over a splined shaft. Most often this type mount is reinforced by a clip that must be released before the arm can be pulled from the shaft. * To remove the wiper arm, raise it as high as it goes and release the clip tab or tap on the slide latch with a screwdriver. * The arm can be carefully pried off using two screwdrivers, prying a little on one side and then on the other. * There is alos a special tool available for prying off splined wiper arms. * The metric screw shafts use a lock nut.

NOTE

The paint on the car can easily be chipped during this operation. Put some cardboard down under the wiper post when prying in case something accidentally slips.

• Most wiper arms can be installed at any point on the spline. * However, when wiper arms are reinstalled on their mounts, make sure they are positioned so the blades cannot hit the frame of the windshield while the wipers are operating. * When the wipers are turned off, most have electrical systems with a provision that allows the arm to continue to move until it reaches full travel at the bottom. A relay then shuts off the motor. * Position the arm so that the blade is about an inch from the windshield frame. * Then, cycle the wipers to see that the blade assembly does not hit the side frame at the other end of its travel. * When checking the placement and operation of the wipers, wet the windshield before turning on the wipers. The water will serve as a lubricant for the wipers."

Removal and Installation

1. Raise windshield wiper blade (17528) end off windshield and slide latch away from windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft.
2. Unlock windshield wiper pivot arm from windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft.
3. Remove windshield wiper pivot arm. Windshield wiper pivot arms can be removed and installed without the aid of any tools.

For installation, follow removal procedures in reverse order. If windshield wiper blade does not touch windshield, then slide latch is not completely in place.

Either, there is a nut that is hiding under the cap, or there is a clippy thing that holds the arm to the shaft.

Why do you want to take the arm off? Normally these are pretty bullet proof.

It is one of my work trucks that I use for my business. We had a bad ice storm and one of my idiot employees tried to open the hood with 6 inches of ice and snow on the hood and windshield. He forced it open thus popping the windshield trim, shifting the hood on its hinges and twisting the whole wiper arm. I am hoping I can remove it and straighten it. I have been told that there might be a clip on it but haven't dug into it far enough to be sure. I just wanted a bit of advice from someone who might know: you guys. Thanks. I am going to dig into it tomorrow. I've never had to remove the entire wiper arm before. Thanks again.

Okay.

At the pivot point (post/shaft), there is either a cap that will lift up, it may require a gentle nudge with a screwdriver, that will expose a nut. Or there will be a tiny tab protruding out of the bottom of the wiper arm at the post under the arm -- raise the arm and look for the tab next to the shaft that the arm is attached to. Use the small screwdriver to either pop the cap up or to lift the small tab, and gently rock the wiper arm on the shaft to release it.

Since you have 6 ft of snow piled on the hood and windshield, there's a good chance the arm will be frozen in place. You may need a heat gun to warm the parts so they will separate.

When you are ready to put the arm(s) back on, look for a missing spline. The missing spline is an alignment guide that forces the arms to be properly aligned. There might not be a missing spline, but you shold look to be sure.

Thanks. As usual, you are very helpful. The problem is that I never learned to read or write, although I do type to an acceptable degree. If questions weren't posted here and everyone read a book, we wouldn't have a newsgroup now would we? [:^) And who has time to fight their way through the vagrants to get into the library?
