P1870 ???? 96 Olds

1996 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1 V-6 with auto tranny, 130,000 miles. The check engine light will come on intermitantly while driving. Had codes cleared and the check engine light stayed off for about 1 month. Now light is back on and code P1870 is set. The only info I can find on this code says trans slipping. Can anyone provide a more detailed explaination ? Is this possibly just a sensor problem or is a trans overhaul needed ?

Car seems to drive fine. It may be a little low on power but it is overdue for a tune-up. Trans seems to operate properly, no slipping detected while driving.

Thanks for the info. The car belongs to a friend of mine. After talking to him again it sounds like the torque converter clutch is chattering when it gets hot. I may be able to borrow a scan tool, what should I look for. I am familiar with the use of a scan tool , I just haven't done too much with trannies. If it turns out to be the valve body problem you mentioned do you have a ball park estimate on the cost? Thanks again for your help.
