Looks like the battery inside the remote control thingy (the original factory one) is starting to die; i was wondering if it is possible to change the battery myself, or would the remote need to be reconfigured by a dealer if i did? Just curious...

you can just change it your self !!! it is normaly a watch battery take it to walmart with you and they can help you !!
You should be able to pop the back off the remote with a screwdriver or coin, then carefully remove and replace the coin-cell battery inside. The remote doesn't have to be reconfigured (the remote's code is fixed - the car gets programmed to handle the remotes, not vice versa).
