My friends 2000 Hyundai Accent with 147k on it blew a head gasket on the highway with no warning.
Is he SOL warranty wise?

Undoubtedly, but head gaskets are not terribly difficult to replace. It shouldn't be that expensive if he has to pay to have it done.
Did the head gasket blowing happen to coincide with the timing belt breaking?
