There are abuses in any system. I think, that the idea behind this system, was that "smart" kids are a rare and precious resource, not to be sacrificed in battle. Or at least make them officers first. I used my twelve year "deferment" to screw some hippie chicks* and then start a family. To me, that was as important, as what was going on elsewhere. If rich kids and smart kids are given more freedom than most, well that is just one of the perks of being rich or smart. Hopefully, they eventually realize this, and give something back.

Well.... history has showed that McCarthy was correct in that there were numerous communists, and communist sympathizers in the US Government.

There just weren't any names on the papers he kept waving around.. Had he done his homework, and not been such a nut, then his efforts might have had a productive outcome..

As for my politics... I am, and always have been, registered with the elections board at all the places I have lived as an Independent. My philosophy is to vote for the guy I think is going to screw things up the least.

I certainly have my problems with young President Bush, at the very least he should not be allowed to give press conferences because he is such a poor public speaker and, therefore, cannot communicate his public policies well.

Mr. Clinton, on the other hand, is personable, charismatic and a good orator and if he came up to me at noon and said it was daytime I would look upward toward the heavens for confirmation because I do not believe he is capable of telling the truth.... about anything...

I am also naive enough to think that integrity and personal honor in our elected officials mean something

1. Why is it conservatives, when faced with criticism of "their" President, can't help but bring up Clinton who has been out of office for five and a half years, instead of being able to defend the President on his own merits?

Actually I'm an equal opportunity smartass, I tend to make fun of both parties equally. I guess growing up around too many politicians sorta took away my willingness to believe much of anything they say.

You may be that rarest of all things, a genuine moderate. I believe that Plato said this first: Everyone hates the moderate, and calls him extreme. The righties call him a leftist. The lefties call him a rightist. You just can't win.

A respected member of my community told me today, that because we are a small mountain community, "We have different laws here". Everyone thinks I'm an extremist, because I want certain members of the community to obey certain Colorado laws. I don't think it's too much to ask, that everybody obey Colorado laws, for example, when they are inside the territorial limits of Colorado. Same thing goes for any other jurisdiction.
