Brake light on dash stays on

Jul 13, 2006 8 Replies

I recently bought a 1978 CJ7 to restore. I noticed the brake light in the speedometer cluster stays on. Whats this telling me? The parking brake is "engaged"?.... there are brake issues with the vehicle?... or both.

The switch is a pretty simple one with a curved copper strap that fatigues with time.

I was to cheap to fork out $4.80 for a new switch so I shimmed it with a sliver from a toothpick.

Either/or basically. The park brake switch is a ground on switch with one wire right at the back of it. It can be unplugged and the light goes off.

The other switch is on the combination valve and that indicates an uneven pressure between the front and rear brake systems. One could have a leak or air.

The primary function is to alert you that the parking brake is set. It has a secondary job to report troulbes with the brake system, notably low brake fluid.

It was the switch. I shimmed it for now until i get a chance to fix it right.

Thanks!

No sense paying for what you can fix!
