Transfer case vent?

It is the drain hose for condensation from the A/C cooling fins. If the hose is not through the firewall, you'll get a puddle of water on the floor when you run the A/C.

Hmmm.. The hose doesn't seem to be going through the firewall, it is going down through the floor of the jeep, about a foot behind the tranny/transfer case shifters.

You are correct. I just took a look at mine. It also goes through the housing about 1 inch in front of the firewall. You will get a lot of water through this hose when using the A/C on humid days.

Thanks Norman. So this hose is connected to the back of the cooling funs under the passenger side of the dash? I wonder how much trouble it will be to hook it back up.

Is it the drain hose for the evaporator or condensor, or whatever the part is that lives under the dash and fills with water?

I'm not sure, it is not actually hooked up to anything at the moment. It looks like it ought to be hooked up to something on the ac coil in the passenger's side of the dash.

It sounds like the drain hose, and an errant foot has knocked it out of place.

There is an evaporator that lives under the dash (you found it already) that takes warm and moist air from outside and turns it into cold dry air inside. The water that is in the air collects in the evaporator and drains to the outside. Have you ever seen the puddle that forms under a car parked in your driveway in the summer? This puddle is from the AC system in general, and from that hose you are asking about in particular. You should be having a puddle forming on the floor in your Jeep if that hose is not connected.

Some of us have had that hose get plugged with navel lint, and the evaporator will overflow into the passenger compartment footwell. You should see if you can pull that hose completely out and make sure it is clear, then put it back in. There should be a nipple (no, not Janet's) nearby that you can connect that hose to.

"Behind" has me confused. to me, behind means closer to the rear axle than the front, but the AC drain hose would be about a foot forward of the shifter and on the passenger side. If one was sitting in the driver's seat, "behind" might mean the space between the shifter and the firewall - which is "forward" of the shifter. A foot behind the shifters would be squarely between the seats.

It shouldn't be too tough. The hose should drop nearly straight down, and since it is a drain, it should connect at the bottom of the evaporator.

You are correct. I actually mean in front of the shifters, as viewed by someone sitting in the drivers seat.

It's definitely the AC drain.
