Detroit TrueTrac LSD Installation Advice

Hey All,

I am looking into buying a Detroit TrueTrac LSD for my Dana 30. I plan on installing it myself.. is this hard to do? Are special tools required? I haven't found too much info on this, so any advice or experience would be appreciated. Thanks

When talking about replacing diff carriers, if you have to ask, it's too hard for you...better to farm it out to a shop and have them do it right.

Thanks for the advice Bill. I think I might go with the Powertrax No-Slip per your suggestion. It seems to be the best "lunch box" locker out there. I like that I can install it myself.. want to keep my Jeep Project 100% me.

Installing the Truetrac isn't the issue. Because you have essentially replaced the carrier with the Truetrac, you will have to set up the gears just as if you had re-geared. I would strongly recommend you have a reputable axle shop do it for you.

Changing the differential carrier only involves two of the four critical adjustments that must be made for ring, pinion, and carrier life. These are the carrier bearing preload and gear back lash. This means that an idiot like myself is able to change the carrier, where I might think twice about doing the pinion. The people who change these things at the dealership aren't any smarter than you are, but they do have tools that you don't. With all that said, unless you are an idiot like me please take it to an axle shop.

By the way, you can buy the Dana axle tools at Miller Special Tools, which makes special tools for Chrysler and Jeep, but I don't have the phone number handy. I believe that Dynatrac also sells them. However, as many dealership service managers have found out, these tools do not make one an axle specialist.
