Anyone else thinking how much work it would take to remove the water intruding into gearboxes/bearings/diff/etc after this?

It would be worth it. The part that worries me is stuff leaking out of the Jeep damaging the environment.
Cheers,

Yup, been there done that. Well, only had the water bow-waving off the windshield, with the inside water over the seats and my dog swimming in the back, but....
I have a high water vent on my transmission unlike any stock Jeep and all new seals in my 86 CJ7 and after inspecting all the fluids figure I was lucky, no water where it shouldn't be.
Can't say the same for the YJ following me, he filled his engine cylinders full of water because he, well no one knew, he had a ram air scoop under the headlight. We check all of them now.

Did anybody catch the language spoken by the bystanders? It sounded like German to me.
