"Last of a Great Breed" Dash Sticker on 86 CJ-7

Has anyone ever seen a dash sticker like this one on an '86 CJ-7?

It reads "LAST OF A GREAT BREED - This Collector's Edition CJ ends an era that began with the legendary Jeep of World War II"

Thanks, Jim

Mine doesn't have one ... but that doesn't mean anything. It has been repainted.

I have an 86 Laredo that did not come with the plaque or the Dana 44 rear.....as it is an early 86. The late 86's had this "sticker" above the left side speaker grill. I have only seen one on the street. I have seen two kinds of these plaques. I picked up one that was said to be NOS (new old stock) that is metal/brass, thin with 90 degree cut corners and graphics are black paint. The aftermarket ones are thicker, a sticker type, rounded corners......I could be wrong. And no, I did not but the one I picked up on my Jeep as that would not be true...The serial number.....last few of VIN will tell the truth.

I have one of the 'last' ones, A CJ7 Laredo with the Dana 44 rear....

My dash was butchered when I got it, someone had tried to sand it and paint it. I took an electric pad sander to finish it and there was some sticker residue in a couple places, the drivers side was bad to finish and just to the top left of the glove box gave me a hard time.

Anyone know what the last serial numbers are?

I know they DID come from the factory with these nameplates.

They sell new ones at Collins Brothers, altough I don't know if they are NOS:

Hello Mike,

List Member Dan Andrella ( snipped-for-privacy@neo.rr.com) has been keeping a list for years of the '86 models with and without the '44. Here is his last work sent to this newsgroup:

=================================================== Jeepers,

I've been doing some research for about two years now on the 1986 CJ-7's rear axle.

In 1986, the last of the CJ-7s built in Toledo had factory installed Dana 44 rear axles. I am lucky to have one of these on my Jeep. AMC installed these beefy axles due to running out of the their standard all-purpose axle, the AMC 20. So it is only in 'limited numbers' that AMC made these 1986 Dana 44 CJ-7s.

I've been trying to determine (approximately) how many is 'limited numbers'. Here is what I know so far, AMC made about 25,939 CJ-7 units that year, according to "Jeep, the Unstoppable Legend". I looked at my Jeep to determine when it was made and according to my VIN plate, the serial number (after all the other coding) is

127638. I've been told to drop the third digit, it's a check number. ***Also, after all the other responses I've received it makes sense. When I compare all the VIN numbers together, dropping any other digit jumbles any type of sequential order. ***Chilton Jeep Book, Page13. The General Information and Maintenance Section of the book. The diagram shows what the VIN numbers mean, and it shows that the third number from the left, of the six numbers used for the sequence number, is a 'Check Digit'.

On mine that would be the # 7, that would make my Jeep the 12,638th CJ unit made that year.

So, questions for you are: 1. Does your (or someone you know) 86 have the Dana 44 axle or the AMC 20??

  1. What is your VIN serial number? (the last six numbers).

I periodically post my results on the Jeep mailing lists & newsgroups.

Reason why I'm doing this? Wish I knew. :)

From 49 other responses, here is what I have so far as of 9/1/98:

AMC 20 Dana 44

002,897 037,443 054,173 090,212 114,137 138,036 005,162 041,479 059,604 092,010 114,590 138,314 009,267 041,682 062,382 093,327 117,558 140,062 010,253 042,144 070,874 095,357 123,362 141,703 010,554 049,379 072,739 098,688 125,707 013,744 074,723 099,691 127,638 019,491 077,804 105,003 133,593 028,187 084,084 108,334 133,596 031,819 085,804 110,243 134,136 037,262 087,788 112,485 136,201

Looking like somewhere between the 049379th and the 054173rd CJ they

switched. 'Limited numbers' looks actually looks like the majority. Which would be a good thing. :)

Thanks for your time!

My Jeep has the Dana 44 and has a VIN ending in 068586. This is consistant with what Dan found.

Thanks, I wonder how high the numbers actually go.

I am right up there at the top of the below list of numbers. Close to

140,000.

No slam against the Liberty, but ... putting this on the Liberty is a bit out of context. The message of this sticker/plaque is that the era ended in '86 with the demise of the CJ. When Chrysler took over the reigns a new era began.
