New tire size for 2k TJ...

I currently have 30 x 9.5 R15LT's. I am going to be getting some new tires soon and was wondering if I could get 31's without having to get new rims or a lift.

Thank ya.

I have 31 inch Goodyears on mine with the stock wheels. 31 x 10.5. No problems at all. 2000 TJ, with the 15 x 8 aluminum wheels.

So I could use my existing rims and put 31's on. So I just end up with a tall wall. What's the drawback with that?

A "tall (side)wall" just means your tire will be able to flex and conform more easily to offroad trail irregularities when you're aired down for offroading. No issues at all on the street for a 31" tire. :)

I can't think of any drawback with that.

I suppose the taller sidewall is a drawback, but the vehicle is not designed to apporach the limits where the drawback would become apparent, indeed the vehicle is designed to take full advantage of the added sidewalls while offroading.

Yep... should work fine. I put 31X10.50s on my stock wheels (replaced the standard 30X9.50 GSAs). I've heard that you may have to add some washers to the steering stops to avoid rubbing at full turn, but that's really tire & Jeep specific. It's not a big deal if you do need to as it just takes a few minutes and you only lose a small amount of turning radius.

Ok....all sounds good so far.

The ride would obviously improve....or at least get no worse (not that it's THAt bad!).

What are we looking at in mileage?! I worked mine out for this past week doing 50km each way to work....after doing all the conversions, I'm only getting about 15.8mpg.

Now, it's a pretty fast highway to travel on...so it's easy to do 120-130kph the whole way....am I past the sweet spot for getting the best mileage?

Just trying to do some budgetting so that I can spend the $ on my Jeep and wheeling!

Try 90 km/h. Keep your rpms around 2000 on the flats. Taller tires will move your 'sweet spot' up in the speed range a bit, but expect slightly reduced fuel efficiency due to extra tire weight and increased rolling resistance.
