Check out these off road lights. They will fit in a par 36 driving light can. You will need to run some heavy wire.

They can be had with wire grille, but I suspect those are mainly for sagebrush grade stuff, not hardcore rocks.

I would presume you want a very bright and wide pattern, which usually means a fairly shallow housing rather than the old paraboloid ones of a Lucas FlameThrower.

Or you could spend half a grand on a set of HID lights and piss off everyone within a mile or so...

I really like my Hella Black Magic lights. With 100W bulbs in them the cops compared 4 of them on at once to their helicopter ground spots to my old tenant, LOL!

They are something else though, not a low angle rock spotter, they are over kill for that. But man when I aim them 50 yds in front with a ditch bias it is like daytime in front of me.

The higher up the light, the better for hole and rock vision, down low is better for distance. A fog lens is better for ditches and up close than a driving light.

Most lights have a 'H' type of bulb and are easy to upgrade the watts if you wire them right for it.

If I wanted close up lights that I expected to bang up, I would buy a $20.00 set of fogs and up the bulb. For close up, quality isn't really needed.

Dim memory is 24 volt, with 300-400 watts being a typical landing bulb. Honestly not a good offroad light, too narrow a beam.

We have a local auto store that sells cheap lights, I too have had good success for close up lights with the cheapies. Just like your Wallmart ones....

Close up just needs light, who gives a crap about beam. Fog lenses are best.

Depends on which way you aim the diode. Of course you could always use a high power zener.

It would take a real large resistor and probably frag fairly quickly. Plus you would use up a lot of power in heat.

The only good way to dim a high current DC lamp is with a current regulator. (current switching/pulsing)

Depends upon the aircraft... My aircraft has a 14V electrical system, but some aircraft have 28V ones... The airliners would be the ones with the 28V lamps with higher wattage... I'm thinking that my landing light is either

100 or 150 watts... You're right on the narrowness of the beam (at least on my landing light)... On some of the airports that are not well lit, it is quite difficult to find the turnoff for the taxiway... I usually keep a Q-beam type light with me and once I've slowed some, I slide the canopy back, plug the Q-beam type light in the lighter port, and shine it off to the side of the runway a couple hundred feet in front of my aircraft... It also makes a good backup for when the landing light burns out and you have to land without a light... Don't use it for landing, I use it to see the taxiway after I have landed...

If you use that same $16 wal-mart light on your Jeep, you only have to buy one type of light for replacement, for both vehicles. I would go with the wal-mart cheapies anyway, they are eventually going to get smashed up under there, and why pay a bunch of money for something you know you are going to break (IMHO).

And any larger private planes, like a King Air. As you add engines, electronics, extensive cabin lighting and higher wattage starters you need the benefits of smaller wires (lighter weight) and reduced amp draw that a 28 volt system gives

We put them on because I think the stock headlights are terrible. We only use the driving lights when we go out to the lake. There's almost

100 miles of road where thick bush comes right up to the side of the road leaving lttle or no shoulder.

We've seen all kinds of wildlife come out of there from rabbits, to Lynx, skunks, foxes and even a moose. The lights are aimed in such a way that they light up the bush more than the road.

All of the Navy aircraft I work on are 28VDC. The only 12VDC system I have ran across is in an UAV (Unmanned Air Vehicle).
