Sounds like they just wanted to steal your radio to sell for drugs. That's why I stick to factory radios, even on old jettas. Have not had a problem yet. (Fingers crossed).

The same procedure happened to me. They called me at 3am on Christmas morning. Luckily I was up playing Civilization III trying to conquer the world and I didn't drink that night. They sent a squad to pick me up and take me to the station, ignoring all one way streets. :-) I had to sign an official statement that I didn't allow them use of the vehicle. I was so pumped I said Merry Christmas to everyone there, and drove away. They broke some things, including the steering column. There is a Mexican auto place by me that replaced it for $175.

The perps who took my vehicle got 6 years but I think they might have been charged with things more than just taking my old van.

Glad you got your Jeep back. When they stole my ratty-ass '84 XJ several years ago it was similarly found two miles away. The idiots stole it with a tank of gas with only enough to get to the station (we all learn just where on that white line we can go before we have to start pushing...) Mine was recovered in the middle of the night, dead of winter, doors open in a crappy neighborhood. They towed it to the impound lot.

The kicker was three weeks later I get the same phone call, they've found my Jeep. Uh, that's odd since I already got it back. I asked where and the address was right outside my office. Not eager to repeat the whole "recover your vehicle from the impound lot" experience I hauled ass outside to let the cop know NOT to tow it again. I'm glad they do such a good job but it really only needed finding once!

Six years later and I *still* haven't replaced that danged steering column. Ah well, it's a beater but still plenty o'fun!

In college we were out drinking on the lawn during the first snow- having the requisite first snowball fight of the year. There was a four-way stop on the corner where our house was, with tall bushes blocking the view from all sides. Two big huge 70's cars rolled the stop, and seeing each other just a bit too late slid into the intersection on the fresh snow- wheels locked, in veeeeery slow motion. There was a pleasing crunch and some minor bending of metal.

The girl rolled down her window and stuck her head out, the guy got out of his car to survey the damage. She rolled up her window, he shrugged his shoulders. He got back in his car and they both drove away without saying a a word.

Yeah I was also super lucky at the junk yard yesterday..............Steering column complete with key, RR door vent window and gear selector cover all for $66.50. I could have waited until Tuesday and got that for 1/2 off, but I wanted it together now. Oh and this column allows the key to come out when the Jeep is running. Worn but I always like that "feature". I have to remember to make some more ignition keys at Menards tonight or tomorrow.

It has been repaired and ready for the alarm that I picked up from Circuit City. Now I need another few hours to put that in. The Club, alarm and the cutoff switch should slow down the thieves the next time. Also I found another radio on Ebay exactly like the last one one kind Jeeper sent to me.

I went a year using a screwdriver, the same screwdriver the thief left behind, to start my van. When it had to go in for emissions, the emissions people refused to start it using a screwdriver so I had to get it fixed.
