Some quick help please - alternator wires

While preparing to install a battery isolator, the wires on the alternator fell out of the plug. Can someone confirm the position of the two wires in the nylon plug to back of the alternator? A large gauge red and a smaller brown wire are in question. The red also ties back the alternator output post. The red I assume to be the excite and the brown maybe the volt meter?

Thanks Bill, but mine is a Delco. I am looking for the particular A & B wire positions in the nylon connector. A picture of a 258/alternator installed would show it.

The brown wire goes into pin 1 and the red in pin 2.

On mine pin 2 is the one farthest away from the main power line.

Mine is internal regulator, like the 7-2A schematic in your link. Only difference is the white color and markings 1 & 2 instead of brown and A & B (oddly enough A=2, B=1). The A & B markings are on the nylon connector itself BTW.

The brown wire gives it away to me...

They are strange. I have heard of some that have reversed pins in the alternator or maybe now that you mention the a and b, maybe just arse backward on the plug vs the alternator case.

I didn't pull the plug to see how it was labeled, just looked at the numbers cast into the alternator case.

If you get it wrong, the engine just won't shut off, no biggie.... Pull the plug and switch them.
