I still use edlin to write batch files.
"copy con" works for me. edlin is too high-tech and feature-filled. :-)
C:\>copy con ls.bat @echo You're not in unix, knucklehead! dir ^Z 1 file(s) copied.
C:\>more ls.bat @echo You're not in unix, knucklehead! dir
C:\>ls You're not in unix, knucklehead!
C:\>dir Volume in drive C is SYSTEM Volume Serial Number is 4CAA-9E79
Directory of C:\
