Tailgate chains?

Nov 18, 2003 9 Replies

Anyone have a source for tailgate chains for my CJ-5? This would be the early-style outside chains, not the later CJ-7 cables. I can't find any online (lots of ads for _covers_ though).

I'm guessing that it is an early GM Stepside part, but the local boneyards are empty.

Hardware store?

Err, yes, for the chain. Been there, done that, got a small pile of links chain sitting under the bench. But that means that I'd have to fabricate the hooks, which is what I'm trying to avoid doing. They aren't just little "S" hook things, they're longer with a second curve that seems to help keep the thing shut.

Gate/screendoor style latch and a link with one of those threaded open dealies in it.

The latch looks like a spring loaded D I use a small one as a belt loop clip.

It helps to have one of these too.

Those hooks are bent that way so that they lay flat. You can accomplish the goal of holding the tailgate shut with a simple S hook. If you insist on the factory type tailgate chains, then try your local dealership, or Leon Rosser on line.

That got me thinking if a 'beener would probably fit in there.

You can also check the boneyard for early Datsun/Toyota trucks. IIRC, they used them too.
