Tinny sound from 2k-TJ

I had asked about this issue in a previous post and wanted to share my findings in case anyone else has the same problem. What I thought was sometning loose or vibrating like a tail pipe or heat shield turned out to be me lugging the engine at low speed. I have the 307 rear end and very seldom use 5th gear unless I hit 70 mph or better. With gas prices being what they are I fond myself staying at 55 mph in the right lane a lot more often and in general driving a lot slower. Evidently , you just can't drive a TJ with that rear end around town in 4th gear at 40mph. As soon as I got the rpm's back up and changed my shift points in 2nd and 3rd the vibration/tinny noise disappeared. So much for trying to drive conservatively... Regards Joe Carroll

Sounds like it could be the cat... gone through any cold water with a very hot catyletic converter lately?? my ZJ does this when it doesn't have much torque applied... I jus purchased a nice high flo cat for her and a Pacesetter header...lookin' forward to the increased air flow.

It's Minnesota so anything is possible. I honestly don't remember having to keep the engine wound this tight but the tinny/harmonic noise is gone. Thanks for the post, I'll keep a close watch on the cat to see if the noise returns or gets worse. Joe Carroll

I'd check the cat. That's exactly what my TJ did. Don't let it go too long before you get it looked at. My TJ got to the point I could barely drive it (and it goes from driveable to not FAST). And don't forget -- 7 year, 70k mile warranty on the emissions stuff -- no matter when/where you bought it. The dealer will inspect for free and replace for free if needed. They won't advertise that, of course, but as I understand it they have to do it.
