my 97 grand cherokee dumped all of it's transmission fluid on the ground this morning as I left the house. It appears to be coming out in the area of the left front wheel well. Any ideas what broke?

That could be a broken cooler line. Or a pressure leak pissing it up there.
I would recommend you actually stick your head under there to see where it is coming from. It could be a $5.00 fix or the tranny shop could sell you a whole new tranny because you don't know where the leak is. Shops tend to take advantage of folks that say 'it's broke, fix it'.
