I have a short in the dash lights of my 82 Scrambler. I can work out the short thing with a little time. While I was poking around under the dash I found several loose wires, and a couple loose molex type plugs. I have the Chiltons manual, but that doesn't really help me figure out where this plug or that plug should go. Maybe some are for optional equipment that I don't have. Maybe they're for some stock equipment that someone removed. Anyone have any ideas? Also, if there is this "place" that always causes short in dash lights let me know.

A short or an open? A short to ground is going to entail blown fuses and/or smoking, melting wires. An open is going to mean that they just don't light up.

The first thing I'd check is the headlight switch. I've had several where the reostat on the back simply gave up -- like the one in my `89 Cherokee right now.

Uninstalled optional equipment. It is cheaper to stock and install one main harness on the assembly line that fits everything than to make a different harness for every package. The extra wire and connectors cost them next to nothing.

Definately a short, definately blowing fuses. The one I pulled out was a 20 amp in place of the 3 amp. So, there may be some wire damage as well.
