WJ to XJ Engine Swap

As far as I know, the New Process transfer cases all have the same input adapter bolt pattern. This means that you could probably bolt your WJ transmission right up to the XJ transfer case. The transmission tail shaft might not fit the TC input, but there should be a replacement TC input shaft that works. If this is not the case (pun intended) then you could drop in the engine to transfer case as a unit. Then you have engine mounts, transmission and transfer case mounts, shorty headers (where do you get those?), drive shafts and wiring to worry about, to mention a few of the main obstacles that come to mind.

I am sure that it will fit, because after all people have put Chevy 350 engines in there, but I am equally sure that something will hit some part of the XJ the first time you drop it in, no matter how careful your measurements. Then, you may be faced with an "interesting engineering challenge" or two.

Is this for novelty value, or do you think it will give the XJ something, that it does not have now? My advice is to let the recyclers sell it to someone who needs it.

Be careful that it wasn't running for long whilst upside down since the oil pressure would have dropped. A friend replaced the body on a car once after a roll over, only to have the engine seize a few thousand miles later due to the previous unseen damage by oil starvation.

Well, the engine on my XJ has probably around 120K miles on it whereas the engine on the WJ has less than half that... I did not change the gear ratio when I put the larger tires on it and it is a bit anemic on accelleration... The WJ had very good accelleration with the 235 hp V8... I guess it's more of an issue of trying to not waste something as long as it doesn't get too expensive in the process...

I have seen too many 'soon to be dead' engines from wrecks to really want one. The thrust bearing on the crank can be mush. You mentioned a barrier... I would check the end play and drain the oil through a screen to see.... If you see any shavings, then think that all the rod journals had that side shear too...

I think the V8 will be too wide, but anything can be made to fit with a sawsall and a torch.... I would be tempted. ;-)

An XJ was built for a V6, so a small V8 would probably fit OK. They did some coercion to get the I6 in there, initially.

Maybe in CA, but I doubt that is the case here in TX... In some of the major metro areas, they have smog tests, but those are basically something that they hookup to the exhaust...

No, it's part of the testing that is necessary for us to get a window tag (inspection sticker)... Maybe if you failed, you might get something that would tell you what was *supposedly* wrong... I've seen too much abuse by less that reputible shops over the years to actually believe that what they *say* is wrong is actually truly wrong... I've seen too many shops that say that you fail the inspection just so that they can sell you something... With the emissions tests, it just gives them room to try to sell you something a lot more expensive... It used to be that all they could get you for was a few bucks for headlight alignment or lightbulb replacement... Now, they can start conning people out of significant amounts of money by claiming problems with their engines...

In Texas, for cars after 1995, the shop just checks the codes on the onboard computer... For 1995 and newer, they check the exhaust gases... If the car is 25 years old or more, there is no emissions test, but the inspector *can* look under the hood for missing equipment if he is so inclined... Looks like I've got a few more years before my XJ is immune to the emission test nonsense... I seriously doubt that I'm going to keep it that many years though...

In CA, they recently closed off the grandfathering of older cars, so my 1952 M38A1 can spew as it wants, but my wife's 1978 VW Rabbit has to be smoged no matter how old it gets.

Unless the law gets changed, it's got a loooooong wait to be smog free... =) You can thank the Sierra Club et al.
