My Sportage 2003 check light went on today but every thing looks normal. Would this be a common problem with this car after 55 000km? Thanks

Check engine lights can be for a nothing (like a gas cap not tightened) to something more serious. Go to a local auto parts store (Autozone around here) that will read the code free. You need this before anything else can happen in repairing your vehicle.
