110 300 tdi engine rattle speculation

Hi all

Had a land rover mechanic listen to 'the noise' today went through every thing thats been done etc etc and he recons that when he used to work at simmonites they had one in just like it and they were so convinced it was a top end rattle they rebuilt the head changed all cam followers and so on started it up and it was just the same so did a complete engine strip down to find little end on no4 pooped. Any one had thier little end fail? If so were you embarrased, and what did it sound like.

Thanks in advance

swmbo's suzuki engine threw a big end shell, which went "gadang gadang gadang" from start up. She asked in the engine was buggered....... Quite a common fault on the SJ410 apparently. Screwed the con rod and the crank....

The sound was caused by the conrod impancting opn the crank on the way up, and the crank on the conrod on the way down. Dunno if a small end would sound the same though......

Last time i heard one it was more of a slight rattle & more like a loud ticking.

I had a mini that sounded like a toffee hammer pinging on the block ( never dropped the rod tho) - dropped in a spare engine and a Mk2 transit diesel that tapped for about 10secs - from the cab it sounded like a light ball pein hammer striking the block before it dropped a rod at 50 mph on the M6 .I would still go with the screwdriver on the rockers if it is valve train related you should be able to establish which one is the problem alternately run a thin feeler under the tappets at tickover if you don't get a result i.e. lessening in noise then it looks like bottom end issues. I was just looking at the WSM (page64 book2) particularly at the tappet guides have you inspected the push rods and or checked the guide bolts are tightened up and not rattling about - just a thought in case some rock ape didn't bother when reassembling - I am just guessing since I haven't had the (dubious) pleasure of stripping down a 2.5......yet Derek ( back to not looking at landies on ebay)

I,ve had all the followers and guides out. I have done the screw driver in ear thing but nothing conclusive I am coming round to the bottom end idea but it realy realy does'nt sound like a big end noise and when the oil was changed there was no tell tale sparkley bits in it.The oil light goes out straight away and does not apear again even when warm on tick over so that kind of rules out main bearings. I am hopeing that at worst its a little end but noing landrovers it will throw the noise rule book out of the window and be a big end and the crank will need grinding just to cheese me off!!

Anyway battle recomences Saturday afternoon head off (again) check valve seat depth, pistons out check big ends and little ends. If this shows nothing up its time to hit the bottle!!!!!!!!

Thanks to every one for comments, tips, advice
